Line 1: Line 1:
1908-01-07 (142lbs) Jimmy Gardner w pts 12 Joe Walcott, The Armory AA, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Jack Sheehan. Prior to the fight, which was made at 142lbs, the Boston Post stated that Gardner should be recognised as the leading man in the world at that weight. Proving far too clever for the old champion, Gardner had him beaten in the first six rounds when going to his head and body at will. In the second half of the contest the younger man was content to counter Walcott, who was desperate to land heavily, and romped to an easy win. Although Walcott, rumoured to have come in above the required weight, claimed a foul in the fourth he was overruled.
