1908-03-16 (132lbs) Seaman Hayes w rsc 8 (15) Boss Edwards, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Eugene Corri. Contested at 132lbs, both men got away to a good start and were punching freely by the fourth, a round that saw Edwards (131) almost on his knees at the bell. In the fifth neither Hayes (129½) or Edwards held back in some fierce rallies and in the sixth the latter was floored before come back strongly. Having gone very weak in the seventh, Edwards was at the mercy of Hayes in the eighth and after being dropped three times the referee called a halt the the fight. Although there was no title billing attached, by beating Edwards with three-¬minute rounds in place, Hayes had every right to claim the English 132lbs title.
