1908-03-16 (158lbs) Billy Papke w pts 10 Hugo Kelly, The Hippodrome, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Referee: Al Bright. In a contest very similar to their previous go it was fought at a fast pace, Papke being allowed to use his strength in the clinches and getting away with butting, while Kelly had both eyes badly damaged in the process. Dropped momentarily in the opening session, Kelly got up quickly, going punch for punch with Papke before gashing him over the right eye in the second round. With Papke using foul tactics the crowd sided with Kelly, and although the decision went against him it was wafer thin.

The Philadelphia Item report said: "The winner was entitled to the best claim to the middleweight title", while the Chicago Tribune stated: "With both men inside 158lbs, Papke eliminated Kelly from the championship race".
