1908-03-30 (135lbs) Joe Fletcher w co 7 (15) Jack Ward, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Billed for the English 135lbs title, Ward (133½) had Fletcher (133¾) down in the second round with a right to the jaw, but the Londoner quickly settled and in the third he dropped his rival twice with similar punches. Coming back full of fight, Ward gave Fletcher plenty to think about in the next three sessions before the latter floored the Gloucester man with blows to the wind in the seventh. Unable to come back from this, Ward was put down twice more, the second occasion seeing him counted out. Although Fletcher legitimately now had a claim to both the 135 and 140lbs titles, after being defeated by Freddie Welsh at 140lbs on 6 September 1909 he did not figure again.
