1908-03-30 (135lbs) Joe Fletcher w co 7 (15) Jack Ward, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Billed for the English 135lbs title, Ward (133½) had Fletcher (133¾) down in the second round with a right to the jaw. However, the Londoner quickly settled, dropping his rival twice with similar punches in the third. Coming back full of fight, Ward gave Fletcher plenty to think about in the next three sessions before the latter floored the Gloucester man with blows to the wind in the seventh. Unable to come back from this, Ward was put down twice more, the second occasion seeing him counted out.

Fletcher legitimately had a claim to both the 135 and 140lbs titles, but after being defeated by Freddie Welsh at 140lbs on 6 September 1909 he did not figure again.
