1908-03-31 (116/118lbs) Jimmy Walsh drew 12 Al Delmont, The AA Armory, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Initially thought to have been a match made at 116lbs, the weight that both men were claiming the American title at, it was eventually set at 117lbs for whatever reason. Although Delmont made a sound start, winning the opening two rounds, Walsh began to impress from the third onwards with solid left jabs to the head and good blocking and ducking abilities. Both showed up as clever operators and because there was no clear winner in the eyes of the referee it was given as a draw.
Thereafter, Walsh would also be claiming the 118lbs title while Delmont fought at weights in excess of that poundage. A week later, on 6 April, Walsh met Young Pierce (nd-l pts 6 at the West End AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and with both men inside 116lbs his title claims were undoubtedly at risk.
