1908-04-20 (122/124lbs) Abe Attell nd-w rsc 8 (20) Eddie Kelly, Big Tent, Sound Beach, Seattle, Washington, USA. Referee: John Reid. With both men making the required 122lbs, this was another defence of Attell’s American title claim at the weight against a man he had outclassed just two months previously. Once again the fight went very much to plan. Having hardly laid a glove on Attell for seven rounds, Kelly went to his corner groggy from a series of hard rights and early in eighth, on being floored twice, he was rescued by the referee.
On 30 April at The Coliseum Rink, San Francisco, California, Attell beat Tommy Sullivan (w co 4) and while original articles were signed for a match at 123lbs when Sullivan found that he could not make the weight a few days before the fight was due to take place it was agreed that he could come in at 126lbs. Billed as a championship battle, technically Attell took over Sullivan’s claim at 124lbs.
