1908-04-23 (142lbs) Mike Twin Sullivan w pts 25 Jimmy Gardner, Vernon Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA. Referee: James J. Jeffries. Reported as a so-called championship fight by the Los Angeles Times both men made the required 142lbs, with Gardner down to 141½lbs the day before. Showing strength and coolness, Sullivan had Gardner at his mercy on several occasions but was unable to finish his foe off. Gardner’s best period in the fight was between the 15th and 20th rounds, but after he slowed appreciably Sullivan had it all his own way.

Following the fight, although unable to make 142lbs any longer Sullivan continued to claim the title at 145lbs.
