1908-05-09 (156lbs) Stanley Ketchel w co 20 (35) Jack Twin Sullivan, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Billy Roche. Reckoned by the Ring Record Book to be for the vacant title there was no mention of that in the San Francisco Chronicle, apart from the fact that both Sullivan and Ketchel were already claiming it. With both men required to make 156lbs, Sullivan managed to keep Ketchel at bay by using a repertoire of tricks, including dropping down without being hit on a few occasions while claiming a foul. In the 13th round it looked all over when Sullivan was decked by a vicious body blow, but back in action he was still causing problems before Ketchel finally caught up with him in the 20th. Knocked down heavily, although Sullivan somehow struggled up at ‘nine’ he was powerless to get up from a right under the heart which saw him dropped again and counted out.
