1908-05-11 (130lbs) Seaman Hayes w pts 15 Jim Lloyd, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Made at 130lbs, Hayes (127½) soon showed that he meant business when quickly finding a way to get inside his opponent’s lead to punish the body with solid blows. Although Lloyd (127½) tried time and again to land the right cross, with Hayes being too astute to leave himself open the contest proceeded with the latter doing the main share of the leading to earn the decision.
Lloyd’s English title claim at the weight disintegrated on the result, while Hayes was only interested in the new featherweight crown.
In the wake of the 11th February 1909 directive on named weight divisions by the NSC, Charlie Lampey, who was claiming to be the English 130lbs champion, was forced to box in the new lightweight division.
