1908-07-04 (133lbs) Battling Nelson w co 17 (25) Joe Gans, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. Billed for the world 133lbs title, the men made the weight according to the reports. Gans easily took the opening five rounds, but it could already be seen that Nelson was shrugging the blows off and forcing the champion to fight every minute of every round. It was in the seventh that Gans began to weaken, and he was put down three times in the 12th, once in the 13th, and once at the end of the 16th, before being smashed down three times in the 17th, the final time being the last, as he was counted out on his side. It was one of boxing’s most surprising results up to that time.
