1908-09-07 (122lbs) Abe Attell drew 23 Owen Moran, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. Billed for the 122lbs world title, with Attell wanting 20 rounds and Moran 25 it was finally agreed on the unusual distance of 23. Attell looked a good winner according to the press, who gave him nine rounds to Moran’s six, but the referee felt that both boys deserved something from the contest. There was no doubt that Attell had his left working overtime, but when Moran forced him to close quarters the Hebrew could not get away quick enough. Moran, who had serious eye damage courtesy of the jab, thought he would have won had it not been for him breaking a hand in the second round, while Attell finished up with displaced knuckles. Asked by Moran to settle the championship over 45 rounds, Attell instantly refused.
Although continuing to claim the British version of the world 122lbs title it would be the last time Moran made the weight, boxing mainly as a lightweight thereafter.
