1908-09-07 (158lbs) Billy Papke w rsc 12 (25) Stanley Ketchel, Vernon Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA. Referee: James J. Jeffries. Billed for the title at 158lbs, Papke shocked Ketchel when, ignoring the accepted ‘sporting’ handshake at the start of the contest, he smashed in a terrific left hook followed by a right cross which closed one of the latter’s eyes. Lifted off his feet three times in the first round, from there onwards Ketchel took a bloody beating for round after round, being dropped again in the sixth and 11th rounds before he was decked twice more in the 12th and rescued by the referee just as the police were about to get involved. Ketchel, with both eyes closed, was so badly beaten that he had to be carried to the dressing room.
