1908-09-09 (133lbs) Battling Nelson w co 21 (45) Joe Gans, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Ed Smith. Despite a lack of billing, Nelson (131¼) successfully defended the world 133lbs title with his defeat of Gans (133), who would have just one more fight left in him before dying from tuberculosis just under two years later. From the first to last, Nelson forced the fight, battling away up close when he could, and drawing Gans’ strength. While Gans appeared all in after the ninth, Nelson kept going and it was just a matter of time despite the fact that the former champion occasionally came back spasmodically with lightning punches. In the 11th Gans’ corner wanted to retire him, but he would not hear of it, insisting that Nelson would have to knock him out if he wanted to win. The end came in the 21st after Nelson rained in lefts and rights to Gans’ jaw and the latter collapsed to the floor to be counted out.
