Line 1: Line 1:
1908-10-19 (142lbs) Young Joseph w pts 15 Corporal Baker, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Recognised as an English 142lbs title fight although not advertised as one, Joseph (140¾) was soon into his stride against the big-punching Baker (140), who concentrated on body blows to being the champion down. By the ninth Baker’s blows were beginning to have an effect on Joseph and in the tenth the corporal was going even stronger before the latter came back at him in the 11th. With Joseph weakening, from thereon he just about held up against the rib-bending punches of the much stronger Baker but an additional few rounds would surely have seen him lose.
