1908-11-26 (142lbs) Jimmy Gardner drew 20 Jimmy Clabby, West Side AC, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: Wallace Woods. According to the New Orleans Daily Picayune, Gardner was defending the 142lbs championship in this one. As far as the press reports go it was generally seen as a fast and scientific battle between two equally matched fighters, with Gardner doing his best work when concentrating on the kidneys and Clabby when shooting in blows to the head. Both men took terrific punishment and in the 15th round Clabby almost had Gardner out before the bell came to his aid. Following that Gardner came back strongly and the draw was seen as a fair result.
In the aftermath of the contest, Gardner stated that he should be seen as the rightful 142lbs champion and considered Jack Blackburn and Mike Twin Sullivan to be his main rivals. He also went on to say that Clabby would need watching in the future.
Meantime, Clabby could have claimed the title on the basis of his draw with Gardner but refrained from doing so until December 1909 when it was clear that the latter would not be making 142lbs again and it had been difficult to tie him down to a return match at that weight.
