1908-11-26 (158lbs) Stanley Ketchel w co 11 (20) Billy Papke, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. Made at 158lbs, and billed for the title, Ketchel regained the championship when he battered Papke with savage body blows in virtually every round before putting him down twice in the 11th, the second occasion enforcing the full count following a storm of lefts and rights to head and body. It had been a tough, hard-hitting contest that saw both men fall out of the ring in the fifth, but Ketchel held sway throughout with his heavier punches landing regularly.
Three of Ketchel’s next four fights were made at 160lbs, against Philadelphia Jack O'Brien (nd-w pts 10 at the National AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York on 26 March 1909), Tony Caponi (nd-w co 4 at the American SC, Schenectady, New York on 2 June) and O'Brien again (nd-w rsc 3 at the National AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 9 June).
