1909-06-08 (142lbs) Jimmy Gardner drew 12 Tommy Quill, Armory AA, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Jack Sheehan. The Boston Post reported this as a defence of Gardner’s 142lbs title claim, with both men inside the weight. While the challenger showed up well, Gardner appeared to be off colour and apart from the fifth round, when Quill was knocked down twice, he was well in the fight. In the tenth Quill went all out to have Gardner wobbling at the final bell and the decision appeared to favour the latter. According to several papers of the day, Quill had a reasonable claim to the title on the result, but failed to press home his advantage and lost to Young Loughrey next time out before moving up in weight.
