1909-06-22 (133lbs) Battling Nelson w rsc 5 (15) Jack Clifford, The Arena, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. Referee: Dave Porteous. Billed for the world 133lbs title, Clifford was not really championship calibre, being no more than a sparring partner, and it showed as Nelson took it easy until dropping him in the fifth round with a solid body blow. Although Clifford got up at the count of ‘five’ the referee stopped the fight on the grounds that he didn’t want police interference at a later stage.
