1909-08-23 (135lbs) Freddie Welsh w rtd 12 (20) Henri Piet, The Pavilion, Mountain Ash, Wales. Referee: George Dunning. Made at 135lbs and billed for the European title, Piet soon showed that he was no novice and before eventually tiring he forced Welsh to box at the top of his game. By the third round Welsh was countering Piet cleverly before landing the best punch of the fight thus far, a smashing right to the head in the fourth. All through Welsh had boxed a clever fight and in the eighth it was clearly seen that Piet, despite his fancy footwork, was being outclassed as well as palpably tiring. The fight ended after 53 seconds of the 12th when Piet retired himself after Welsh had ripped in heavy punches to head and body.
With Ad Wolgast holding the world 133lbs crown, Welsh claimed the 135lbs version of the lightweight championship on his victory at the weight.
