1909-11-08 (135lbs) Freddie Welsh w pts 20 Johnny Summers, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Tom Scott. Billed for the British and European 135lb titles, Welsh (133½) extended his championship claim when comfortably outscoring Summers (134). The masterful Welsh had taken a lead in the first round and continued to add to it in every subsequent session, boxing quite brilliantly against the hard-hitting Summers, who was never given many opportunities to land with his favoured punches. The downside to Welsh’s performance was that he was too cautious and held too often, but in doing so he showed a pretty near impregnable defence according to Boxing. He also used his head on occasion, for which he was warned severely by the referee. Although Welsh never once dropped the game Summers despite having landed many blows on the latter’s jaw, his brilliant boxing convinced most of those in attendance that he was a world beater.
