1910-03-21 (147lbs) Young Joseph w disq 11 (20) Jack Goldswain, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Tom Scott. The inaugural contest involving the Lonsdale Belt for the British 147lbs welterweight title saw Joseph (146½) matched against Goldswain (145). By the third round Joseph was hitting hard and straight, whilst Goldswain was having difficulty landing, and it appeared that the latter had left his best days behind him. There was far too much holding for it to be exciting and in the tenth Goldswain was beginning to take a battering, having already gone groggy on several occasions leading up to that round. After clutching again and again in the 11th and refusing to break the referee issued a final warning, and when that was ignored Goldswain was disqualified.
On winning, Joseph claimed the world title at the new weight.
