1910-11-23 (116lbs) Monte Attell w pts 10 Jimmy Walsh, The Hippodrome, Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Well documented in the San Francisco Chronicle, Walsh refused to weigh in while Attell, who scaled inside 116lbs, maintained his title claim at that weight. The fight went ahead with Walsh thought to be in the region of 122lbs, Attell finishing the opening session with his right eye closed. Walsh’s main ploy was to rush Attell to the ropes, but the latter often rocked him back with solid head punches while using good footwork to evade blows coming his way. There were no knockdowns.
Meanwhile, Walsh continued to claim the title at 118lbs, drawing over 12 rounds against Al Delmont (at the Armory AA, Boston, Massachusetts on 16 May 1911) in a fight billed to decide the best man on the Eastern Board at the weight. However, made at catchweights it decided nothing and Walsh should be recognised only as a featherweight from there on in.
