1911-01-27 (118lbs) Digger Stanley nd-drew 10 Frankie Burns, National SC, New Amsterdam Opera House, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Patsy Haley. Although made at 117lbs in order to protect Stanley’s world title claim at 118lbs, I have included it on the basis that had Burns won inside the distance he would have undoubtedly claimed the championship at that weight. Burns already saw himself as a claimant at 116lbs, possibly due to his win over Young O’Leary (nd-w co 7 at the Olympic AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York on 6 September 1910), but at that moment in time it counted for little.

The fight itself was poor, with too much mauling and holding. Stanley was also guilty of illegal head-work and use of the elbows. While Stanley found the target more than Burns did, there were very few good punches thrown, with much of the action being at close-quarters.
