1911-02-27 (135lbs) Matt Wells w pts 20 Freddie Welsh, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Billed for the British and European 135lb titles, Wells, the former four-time ABA lightweight champion, automatically took over Welsh’s world title claim at the weight on winning. According to Boxing, Wells won 12 rounds to Welsh’s six and started so well that he had ten of the first 11 sessions in the bag before the Welshman got going. Showing tremendous speed, especially with the left jab, Wells gave Welsh no rest whatsoever and although the latter did better in the sixth it was not until the 13th, as his rival tired, that he began to get through. In the 16th Welsh’s head came into contact with Wells’ damaged left eye and the blood flowed and in the 17th his knee came up in a clinch and the Londoner almost collapsed. The last few sessions were frantic with Welsh looking for a knockout, but it was not to be and the verdict in Wells’ favour was loudly cheered.
