1911-04-28 (158lbs) Hugo Kelly nd-w pts 10 Cyclone Johnny Thompson, The Auditorium, Racine, Wisconsin, USA. With both men claiming the title, this contest was made at 158lbs with Kelly (156) making the weight at 3pm, while Thompson, who scaled 159½, proved that he was either having problems or was just uninterested. Refusing to accept the forfeit, Kelly used short right uppercuts to counter Thompson, who continually looked to get inside, and although much of it was give and take the latter was generally outboxed. After Thompson, whose left eye was closed by straight lefts, lost a tooth in the eighth he resorted to covering up for the remainder of the contest. There were no knockdowns. On 27 July, Thompson met Willie Lewis (nd-w pts 10 at the National AC, NYC, New York) and while it is unclear at what weight the contest was made at, Lewis, who could easily make 158lbs at that time, would undoubtedly have claimed the title had he won inside the distance.
