1911-05-27 (133lbs) Ad Wolgast w rtd 17 (20) Oakland Frankie Burns, Eighth Street Arena, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. Billed for the world 133lbs title, never at any stage of the fight did Burns look like winning, his peculiar crab-like defence saving him from being floored and almost certainly knocked out. With his nose badly damaged, his eyes virtually closed and his ear ripped Burns looked a sorry state at the end of the 16th round, having defied all of Wolgast’s best efforts to finish him, but when the bell rang to start the 17th his corner recognising that the task was hopeless tossed in the towel.
