1911-06-02 (135lbs) [[Matt Wells]] nd-w pts 10 [[Leach Cross]], Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Both men weighed in at 135lbs, thus putting Wells’ championship claim at the weight at risk. Winning eight out of the ten rounds boxed, Wells controlled the fight all the way, inflicting much punishment on Leach, who finished with both eyes almost closed and a badly battered mouth. Leach was nearly ready for the stoppage on at least three occasions and in the ninth Wells had him going with a left hook but was unable to apply a finish.
