1911-07-04 (133lbs) Ad Wolgast w co 13 (20) Owen Moran, Eighth Street Arena, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. Both men were announced as being inside the required 133lbs, with Moran scaling 130 the day prior to the fight. Having gradually worn the challenger down, Wolgast went to work in the 13th with a vengeance, smashing in three terrific rights to the stomach at the start of the round, and as Moran began to fall he was hit by a cracking left hook and was counted out. After the count, Moran claimed a foul for low blows but his calls went unanswered.

Following this one, in 1912 Wolgast took on three opponents in short distance contests made at 133lbs. He had a close call against Willie Ritchie (nd-drew 4 at Coffroth’s Arena, San Francisco, California on 11 May) before meeting Freddie Daniels (nd-w pts 4 in St Joseph, Missouri on 17 May) and Young Jack O’Brien (nd-w pts 6 at the American SC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 31 May). Having impressed against the champion, Ritchie would earn himself a fully-fledged title shot by the end of the year.
