1911-08-30 (135lbs) Matt Wells nd-w pts 10 Knockout Brown, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Made at 133lbs, and appearing in the first big bout held under the new Frawley Law, had Wells lost he would probably have had great difficulty in convincing the American public that he had a legitimate 135lbs title claim. Although Brown had predicted that he would win inside the distance, the ease with which Wells battered his defences and stopped his rushes with countering lefts made a nonsense of the American’s statement. Adapting himself to the occasion, Wells’ guard was too good for Brown to penetrate however hard he tried, while the visitor’s jabs and swings seldom missed their target.
