1911-09-04 (122lbs) Johnny Kilbane w co 16 (20) Joe Rivers, Vernon Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA. The final leg of a 122lbs competition saw Rivers forcing the fight for 15 rounds as Kilbane fought mainly on the defensive and looked a certain loser. However, in the 16th a blow to the jaw dazed Rivers before he went down from a right to the stomach, and on getting to his feet at ‘nine’ a right swing to the head sent him down to be counted out. By his victory Kilbane inherited Rivers’ title claim and ensured a match with Abe Attell.
