1911-10-05 (135lbs) Matt Wells nd-w co 5 (10) Billy Donovan, Olympic AC, Agnes Street Theatre, Toronto, Canada. Made at 135lbs, thus putting Wells’ title claim at risk, the tall, rangy Donovan was not up to the job and was outclassed by the Englishman throughout. Playing with his rival for the opening three rounds before opening up in the fifth, Wells showed that he could punch as well as box before forcing Donovan to take the full count following a tremendous right to the jaw. The Toronto Mail stated that, although not seen at his best due to the poor opposition, Wells proved to be lightning fast on his feet and a man who was very quick to seize upon openings.
