Billed for the British 112lbs title, the clever Smith started fast and was edging ahead of Ruddick by the sixth round as the latter began to spend too much time on the defensive. With hurtful body blows beginning to make an impact, Ruddick was floored in the ninth and although he fought on in determined fashion from thereon Smith moved steadily ahead to win by a wide margin.
