1912-02-22 (122lbs) Johnny Kilbane w pts 20 Abe Attell, Vernon Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA. Referee: Charles Eyton. Billed for the world 122lbs title, Kilbane led Attell from start to finish as he proved that their previous encounter was merely a ploy to get a championship opportunity. Showing himself to be faster than the champion, Kilbane was able to get in lefts and rights, sometimes without reply, and in the fifth round Attell’s left eye was almost closed shut. The fight followed a similar pattern throughout, and at the final bell the referee had no hesitation in lifting Kilbane’s arm. Although Kilbane promised much, he achieved little when deciding to stick mainly to no-decision defences and coming in above the weight from there on.
Two ‘risk’ fights saw Kilbane (124½) take a ten-round no-decision press win over the 122lbs Frankie Burns at the St Nicholas Rink, Manhattan, NYC, New York on 14 May, prior to drawing over 12 rounds with Jimmy Walsh at the Pilgrim AA, Boston, Massachusetts on 21 May. The Boston Post claimed it to be the first title bout held in ‘The Hub’ for years, then, in the next breath, called it a catchweight contest with Kilbane coming to the ring at 125lbs against Walsh’s 122.
