1912-02-22 (158lbs) Frank Mantell w pts 20 Billy Papke, Buffalo Park, Sacramento, California, USA. Referee: Sol Levison. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, this fight was part of a 158lbs elimination tournament. Press reports stated that Papke, who won two rounds at most, failed to take advantage of the situation and less than a dozen of his wild swings hit the target, he was that poor. Even though Mantell failed to set the town alight he had the better of the fighting, being able to tie Papke up on the inside throughout. In fact, he did not have to be at his best to win.

Afterwards, the Philadelphia Item reported: "That whatever claim Papke had to the title is now the undisputed property of Mantell".

However, although Papke continued to claim the title even though it was rumoured that he had failed to make 158lbs on the day of the fight, his cause was now considerably lacking support in America.
