1912-03-20 (158lbs) Hugo Kelly nd-l pts 10 Eddie McGoorty, Coliseum Skating Palace, Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA. Referee: Eddie Santry. With Kelly’s 158lbs title claim at stake, McGoorty (157) was easily the better man but could not keep his man down despite scoring a first-round knockdown. Kelly (156½), who stayed down for ‘nine’, was never really threatened again by McGoorty, who used the left hand consistently to score points, but was obviously weakened by the weight making. In fact, Kelly did not land six clean, hard punches throughout the fight as McGoorty’s defence was always in place and he looked but a shadow of the man who outpointed Frank Klaus a year or so earlier.
