1912-03-23 (158lbs) Frank Klaus w pts 20 Jack Dillon, Daly City Arena, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. Billed as a middleweight elimination fight at 158lbs, on the result Klaus took over Dillon’s claim at the weight. A wrestling match for much of the time, Dillon was the better boxer of the pair but could not hurt Klaus, who just kept boring in. There were no knockdowns, but both men butted each other on occasion and while Dillon looked to have secured the points press reports intimated that the referee was swayed by Klaus’ last-ditch finish when giving the decision. In a return match at 158lbs between the pair, a ten-round press win for Klaus at Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York on 3 May, the ringside scales showed both men to be ten pounds adrift. Klaus was adamant that he had been 157½ earlier in the day, while Dillon claimed to have been 158½lbs at the same time.
