1912-10-04 (147lbs) Marcel Thomas w pts 15 Dixie Kid, Premierland, Paris, France. Referee: Emile Maitrot. In a title match made at 147lbs, with both men announced as having made the weight, right from the opening bell the match had a bad taste to it, especially as heavy bets in certain quarters were being made on Thomas to win or last into the later rounds. Prior to the contest, the Kid, who was recognised as the 147lbs champion in France, was expected to win without difficulty, but having pranced about for 11 rounds without doing any damage to Thomas the American suddenly woke up in the 12th only to find that he had nothing left in the tank. While the Kid had been taking time out Thomas had been scoring with the left, and in the final four sessions he opened up with both hands to win handily.
At the highest level this was virtually the end of the road for the Kid, and despite him boxing on until early 1916 (not taking into account the single contest for him in 1920) he lost almost as many as he won.
