1912-10-07 (158lbs) Eddie McGoorty nd-w rsc 5 (10) Jack Denning, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Billy Joh. In a match made at 158lbs, this should be seen as a defence of McGoorty’s claim at the weight. Having weathered McGoorty’s heavy punching in the opening two rounds, Denning (157¾) had come back to outbox the title claimant in the third and fourth sessions and was going along nicely in the fifth when he suddenly bent over claiming a foul. McGoorty (157¾) later explained that he had sunk a long left into the pit of Denning’s body that had taken all the steam out of him and the latter had tried to claim a foul before being overruled by the referee. Having been told that he did not wish to carry on, the referee stopped the fight and awarded the decision to McGoorty.

Two days later, McGoorty met Leo Houck (nd-l pts 6 on 9 October at the Olympia AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) at 158lbs over a short distance and stayed put despite losing the press decision.
