1912-11-11 (135lbs) Freddie Welsh w pts 20 Matt Wells, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Billed for the British and European 135lb titles and a return contest, while there was never much between Wells and Welsh this time round it was the latter who secured the points win, albeit by a close margin. Although both had shown great speed, brilliant footwork and anticipation, had Welsh boxed without the occasional use of the open glove his victory would have been more convincing. Having worked hard in the gym to overcome the Londoner’s left jab, Welsh also had realised that his best work would come on the inside and it was his great infighting ability that ultimately won the day.
