1913-01-14 (145lbs) Wildcat Ferns nd-w pts 15 Charley Pierson, The Auditorium, St Joseph, Missouri, USA. Referee: Walter Bates. Both men made the required 145lbs mark according to the St Joseph Gazette, who went on to report that the fight did not warm up until the fourth round when Pierson was sent sprawling by a swinging right to the jaw. Fairly even up to the 11th, that was the best round to date as both men started fighting hard, and Pierson was momentarily knocked through the ropes before coming back strongly. Although a foul blow sent Ferns to his knees in the 12th he was quickly back in the fray, playing on Pierson’s features, and in the 14th a left uppercut dropped the latter to the floor. The final session saw Pierson under pressure again, before being saved by the bell with the count at ‘seven’ after being floored by a batch of solid uppercuts.
