1913-02-17 (175lbs) Bob Moha nd-w pts 10 Cyclone Johnny Thompson, Southside AC, Hippodrome Arena, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Referee: John McIntosh. Made at 175lbs in response to the NYSAC recognising a ‘commission’ weight class for men weighing between 160 and 175lbs, the Fort Wayne Sentinel stated that the winner would claim the title. Ultimately, Moha proved much too strong for Thompson despite the latter fighting on gamely to the final bell. According to press reports every round was full of action and hard hitting, with Moha landing heavily throughout and hurting Thompson on many occasions, especially with body blows. Although the contest went the distance, both the Indianapolis Star and La Crosse Tribune reported that Moha would now be claiming the 175lbs title, regardless of the fact that he could make the middleweight limit, which he did in three of his next four outings, against Eddie McGoorty (nd-drew 10 on 24 March at the Southside AC, Milwaukee), Jack Dillon (nd-l pts 10 at the same venue on 28 April) and Johnny Howard (nd-drew 10 on 20 December at the Irving AC, NYC, New York). Had Moha lost any of these fights inside the distance, his ‘commission’ title claim would have been extinct. As it was it was barely recognised.
