1913-03-10 (145lbs) Wildcat Ferns w pts 10 Spike Kelly, Labor Temple Auditorium, Kansas City, Missouri, USA. With both men making the required 145lbs, and their title claims at the weight automatically on the line, it was Ferns who made all the running to take six rounds with four even according to press reports. Kelly, who fought on gamely at all times, finished with a badly damaged mouth.

Fourteen days later, on 24 March, Kelly knocked out Jack Foreman inside two rounds of an eight rounder at the Phoenix AC, Memphis, Tennessee. The Memphis Daily Appeal reported that Kelly put his title claim at risk in a fight made at 145lbs, regardless of his recent loss to Ferns.
