1913-04-10 (158lbs) Eddie McGoorty nd-w pts 10 Gus Christie, The Armory, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, USA. Referee: Harry Stout. Made at 158lbs, on the day of the fight the Fond du Lac Daily Commonwealth claimed that both men were down to weight in what would be Christie’s second attempt inside six weeks to carry off McGoorty’s title claim. Previously, McGoorty had come in at 168lbs, but this time he was in good condition. Christie made a very fast start, but every time he closed he was met by a trip-hammer uppercut that rocked him back. Apart from the fourth McGoorty won every round, and it was a surprise that Christie was still standing at the end, his face busted up but his courage intact. Even when Christie gave it everything in the fourth as he swung hard for a knockout, with McGoorty far too slippery in defence to be caught he was soon back smashing lefts and rights into his opponent’s face.
McGoorty next took on Freddie Hicks (nd-w pts 8 at the Athletic Club, Windsor, Ontario, Canada on 16 April) at 158lbs in a contest that carried a certain amount of risk.
