1913-04-14 (160lbs) Pat O'Keefe w pts 20 Frank Mantell, The Ring, Southwark, London, England. Referee: Dick Burge. Billed as a title fight at 160lbs, with both men announced as being within the limit, it was reported that O’Keefe was fighting for Mantell’s New York version of the world title. Unfortunately, for O’Keefe, however, by the time the fight took place Mantell had already forfeited any support he may have had. Having hurt O’Keefe in the opening session with wide rights to the head Mantell hardly did anything much of note from there on in, and although he made the body his target more often than not the Englishman’s left kept him out. With O’Keefe slowing over the last three rounds Mantell took advantage when working the body for all his worth, but it was not enough.
O'Keefe’s victory ultimately proved meaningless, his next two contests, defeats at the hands of Bombardier Billy Wells and Georges Carpentier, coming in the heavyweight division.
