1913-05-02 (158lbs) Eddie McGoorty drew 10 Jimmy Clabby, Athletic Club, Denver, Colorado, USA. Referee: Abe Pollock. Billed for the 158lbs title, both men were inside with Clabby announced as 154lbs. Described as one of the fastest and most scientific contests ever seen in the territory, Clabby’s cleverness was offset to a degree by the extra strength possessed by McGoorty. There were no knockdowns, and there was never any likelihood of one occurring as both men were so evenly matched. Although Clabby landed the greater volume of blows and appeared to be a better judge of distance, McGoorty was the heavier hitter, his punches carrying more authority when they landed. Afterwards, a prominent Wisconsin sportsman stated that the referee was incompetent and that McGoorty received the worst beating of his career, being made to look like a novice at times.
