1913-05-24 Arthur Pelkey w co 1 (10) Luther McCarty, Tommy Burns’ Arena, Calgary, Canada. Referee: Ed Smith. McCarty’s first proper title defence as the ‘white’ champion ended in tragedy when, after being knocked down and failing to regain consciousness he was pronounced dead following a haemorrhaging of the brain. The contest had only just begun when McCarty dropped to the floor after taking a light right to the jaw and was counted out amidst a brilliant ray of sunshine that suddenly blazed through the roof on to the ring platform at that very moment.
