1913-07-04 (142lbs) Wildcat Ferns w pts 10 Young Denny, Pelican Park, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: Mr Bronson. The New Orleans Daily Picayune reported this as a billed championship match at 142lbs with Ferns’ title claim on the line. After a cat-and-mouse start, the fight started with a vengeance in the fifth round as both men traded heavy blows and following a couple of sessions of close-quarter work Denny seemed to have the better of things. Although Ferns continued to charge in, throwing vicious punches, Denny managed to avoid the great majority while countering heavily to the body and by the ninth the ‘Wildcat’ was carrying a badly gashed left eye. The tenth round saw Denny well on top, with the much weakened Ferns taking a beating and ready to drop before the final bell came to his rescue. When the referee indicated that Ferns was the winner at the expense of the local man all hell broke loose and the third man was lucky to escape injury as the crowd surged towards him.
