Chip had claimed the title at 160lbs and this match was made at that weight, with O'Neil having a two-pound advantage at 159lbs. Chip outboxed and outfought the game O’Neil, putting him down twice in the second round, before the latter came back strongly in the tenth, having weathered the storm by covering up and keeping out of danger.
