1913-12-16 (145lbs) Spike Kelly w pts 15 Billy Walters, Eagles Hall, St Joseph, Missouri, USA. Made at 145lbs, Kelly held on to his title claim when dancing his way to points win over Walters, often jabbing him at will and never being in any danger. While Walters was not disgraced, due to him giving it everything, he was unable to locate Kelly, and after he had butted the latter at the final bell there was a free-for-all that lasted about a minute.
On 22 December, Kelly knocked out Jimmy Burns in the final session of a ten-round no-decision affair at the Moose Lodge Hall, Kankakee, Illinois, following a left-right to the jaw with just ten seconds of the contest remaining. Initially thought to have involved Kelly’s title claim as the Kankakee Daily Republican reported it to be a bout between men of the 142lbs class, it was a catchweight contest above the weight.
